The Diploma in First Line Management aims to give practising or potential first line managers the widest choice for their formal development in this role. This qualification does this by developing a wide range of basic management skills and assisting participants in gaining the comprehensive knowledge required at this level.

The primary aims of the programme are:

  • To help participants to gain the basic knowledge that a first line manager needs
  • To develop their basic skills in management
  • To build confidence

Participants will normally be either practising or aspiring team or cell leaders. There are no formal educational requirements but learners should have a background that will enable them to benefit from the programme. This is likely to be Level 2 Key Skills Literacy and Numeracy, or their equivalent. Learners who are sponsored by their employers and those without such sponsorship are equally eligible.

Duration:

  • A 2 hour induction followed by 45 tutor-led workshop sessions of 3 hours duration
  • A minimum of 10 hours tutorial support
  • Candidates will be expected to undertake additional self-study/research before and after each workshop based on ILM approved distance learning materials
  • Although the amount of self-study/research time required will vary for each candidate it is expected that a minimum of 73 hours will be required
  • The unit titles to be covered together with their learning outcomes are shown overleaf

Location:

All group sessions will be held at Protech's centre in Leighton Buzzard or company premises.

Assessment:

Each candidate must complete to the national standard:

  • a work based assignment relating to the first mandatory unit (1000 - 2000 words) and a change management report relating to  3 of the mandatory units (1500-3000 words) , and an innovation report (2500-5000 words) relating to the other 4 mandatory units, and a briefing/presentation of at least 7 mins
  • thirteen short assessments of knowledge relating to the optional units, in the form of work-based assignments, reflective reviews, knowledge reviews, oral presentations, role-play/scenarios, Written reports

Progression:

Successful participants may benefit from career enhancement and/or progress to L3 S/NVQ in Management, L4 Award in Management, L4 S/NVQ in Management, L5 Award, Certificate or Diploma in Management or another qualification at a suitable level within or outside the National Qualifications Framework.
