Someries Infants School, Luton - Team Leading

"Training with Protech has developed the confidence of my Site Manager and given him the skills to approach staff situations well."  Jennifer Meara, Head Teacher, Someries Infants School, Luton.

Background

Jennifer is the head teacher at Someries Infants School in Luton.  Les Shipp, her Site Manager approached her to request team-leading training with Protech.  Les directs a team of six cleaners; a position he had held for two years with no formal training.  He became aware of the opportunity to attend a Team Leading course to improve his performance at work and manage his staff more effectively.

Training Objectives

To develop personal leadership and management skills, and to build competency in directing and co-ordinating people.

Les's individual goal was to become skilled in his workplace practice and managing difficult staff members.

 

Les's Learning Journey

Les was inspired by the training he received from Protech, and enjoyed the course structure with its balance of formal training and on the job portfolio work. He had total success in completing the course and building his portfolio.  Les said: "The mix of portfolio building and the five day-releases with Protech worked very well for me, and they provided excellent support by phone and email". As a result he applies his training to his work place responsibilities and can clearly identify how to improve his work structure.

Les commented: "My methods and practices have changed very positively since taking the course. For example, I have introduced recording methods that formalise our working programmes". A major challenge he faced was staff management, and he discovered that the course had given him the tools he needed to manage the team more effectively. Les recognises that:" You can't deal with work relationships the same as you do with home relationships, and I have developed new ways to address these issues".

Jennifer agrees with Les' assessment. She is confident that he has gained many major benefits, including improved confidence, and skills in dealing with staff relationships and motivation.

Outcome

Both Les and Jennifer are certain that Les has achieved the objectives set at the start of his course.  They are delighted with the resultant improved working practices and staff management skills that he has developed, and with the overall outcome.  They would recommend Protech to other organisations wholeheartedly.
