Unidex UK Limited, St Albans - IT Skills

"You are NEVER too old to learn!" - Tim Keane, UK Sales Director for Unidex UK, an international import and export company, based in St Albans, Hertfordshire.  He once thought he was too old, but not now.

 

Background

Tim had little confidence with computers generally, Microsoft Word and Excel in particular.  He frequently needed a staff member to produce documents for him, which made life difficult.  The final trigger to do something about this situation was the realisation that his young son would soon have more knowledge than he did.

Tim decided to use Protech Training Services for qualification personal IT skills development programme.  Tim had no previous training in the use of Microsoft applications; he knew that a classroom approach would not work for him and that he needed on the job training.

Training Objectives

Tim needed to build skills and knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook and use of the Internet for business purposes.

Tim's goal was to increase his confidence and skills in the use of word processing and Excel and to overcome his fear of training. He wanted to find new and faster ways of doing his job and anticipated that these new skills would help to achieve it.

Tim's Learning Journey

Tim is totally impressed with the training he has received, and he explains: "Protech will be the first training provider that I approach in future".

 

Before starting the course Tim was very anxious about entering the world of training because he had done no formal learning since leaving school, and he wondered: "Am I too old to do this?"

 

Tim praised the way that his Protech trainer encouraged him and gave him the support he needed when he struggled to understand.  He enjoyed working through the programme and found that the distance learning method worked particularly well for him.  He was able to upload work from home using Protech's E-portfolio and share information with his trainer over the internet; this was so convenient and he would often discuss his work over the phone while they reviewed his output together online.

 

He found enormous benefit in being able to see at a glance how well he was doing in his studies and what else needed to be done by using the built in progress bar.  Tim learnt many new tips about using Word and Excel and he is now completely confident writing letters and producing documents.  He also discovered how to use the internet more effectively for work purposes and is now using metasearch engines and can easily search for financial information on other companies.  Tim declares: "This learning programme has been a real asset and has helped me in my work".

Outcome

Tim stated: "I am much more confident now in the use of IT".  He is pleased that his objectives have both been achieved and exceeded, and is looking forward to further training in the near future.

He added: "Protech is a highly competent company to deal with.  If I had attended a classroom course I would never have done it, this form of on the job training worked for me."
