Background
Steve had been promoted to team leader from the shop floor and was now managing 4- 7 staff (permanent and contractors). Though Steve was very competent Dave, his manager, was keen to get him trained in the basic tools of team leading and to help increase his confidence. Steve had been with the company for 20 years and had no experience of external training in that time. Casella Ltd had used Protech for previous team leading courses and Dave was pleased to find out that Protech now offered NVQ accredited courses.

The Learning Journey
Steve had not been on an external training course for many years and was unsure as to how he would manage. The Protech team were able to offer the reassurance and encouragement that Steve needed to get started. Steve found the training challenging but received good support from his Protech tutor. Dave said that Steve, "always felt he could call and clarify points with his tutor if he needed to, and that Protech's e-mail support was a great help keeping him on track with this work assignments". The taught workshops were particularly helpful as this was an opportunity to interact and share information with his peers. Overall he found that he got the work done on time and that the learning experience was "interesting and enjoyable". Steve's motivation and hard work on the course was recognised and he achieved Learner of the Year at the Protech Awards Ceremony in May 2009.
Outcome
Dave is pleased that the course has met his training objectives. Dave said: "there has been a marked improvement in Steve's performance. New techniques have been brought to his work practice and his productivity has increased".
